What is a chemical peel?
Chemical facial peels, also referred to as chemical resurfacing, are used to produce a controlled injury to the skin to promote the growth of new skin. Chemical peels have been around for hundreds of years from ancient Egyptians bathing in sour milk and old wine that contained lactic and fruit acids that are still commonly used acids in mild chemical peels today. Skin peels are used to exfoliate and peel away the outer layers of skin to reveal a smooth, tight and more even toned complexion with a youthful radiant glow.
Benefits: (For optimal results, it is recommended to do 3-6 peels 2-3 weeks apart although you will see results after just one treatment.)
- Exfoliates outer dead skin cells to reveal a healthy new layer of skin
- Helps minimize fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and scars
- Helps brighten dull, blotchy and uneven complexions
- Helps reduce the appearance of blemishes
- Stimulates collagen and elastin production for firmer skin
- Improves the appearance of acne blemishes, blackheads and large pores
- Fights sun damage, discolouration, age spots and scarring
What to expect:
The chemical peels performed at Sen are all mild-medium strength peels. Because of this, the downtime post peel should be minimal and cause little disruption to your daily life. There many different types of peels (glycolic, salicylic, lactic, and fusion are most common), each have specific properties and the type of peel will be chosen based on your skin tone, skin type and problems you'd like to address.
During the peel treatment you can expect:
- Mild to moderate tingling or burning
- Your face may feel warm
If at any time the sensation is too intense, a neutralizer solution will be immediately applied to stop the process. You will still benefit from the treatment even if the process is stopped early. Up to 3 passes of solution may be applied in 5-8 minute increments (depending on comfort level and strength of peel you desire), but you will still see results if only one pass is applied.
Since the purpose of a peel is to remove dead skin and promote new skin growth, some very normal post-peel expectations include:
- Minor inflammation, redness or sensitivity
- Flaking or minor scabbing
This typically lasts about 1 week but you may see some flaking for up to 2 weeks.
You should NOT receive a chemical peel if:
- You are currently taking antibiotics, Accutane or oral steroids (should wait approx 1 year after taking Accutane before getting a peel)
- You have any open wounds or cold sores
- You have a tendency to form keloid scars
- You have an auto-immune disorder
- You are undergoing cancer treatments
- You have had any hair removal treatments in the past 2 days
